Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, the greatest, but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is.
Larry, if you were gay...
... it wouldn't change much of how Democrats and Progressives in Idaho think of you. We'd hate your stance on the environment, we'd consider you a sellout to downstream water interests, we'd question your ag-related judgement, we'd call you a corporatist gasbag. We'd grudgingly respect you at least were trying to find a sane compromise on immigration (unlike nativists and bigots throughout your party). We'd call you a flaming hypocrite (sorry for the pun) for your votes on gay issues and your stance on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'. We'd be eager to take you on in '08 over your ineptitude and lack of effective oversight on veterans' issues.
But hating you just for being gay?... really. C'mon. That'd be like blaming Iraq for 9/11.
